Outer West Durban

The area

The two primary commercial and industrial centres in Outer West Durban are Hammarsdale and Cato Ridge. They are the prime economic focal points for approximately 216 000 people that live in Wards 1, 4-7, 91 and 103 which stretch across 390 square kilometers on eThekwini’s western boundary.

The area has significant development potential. It is perfectly positioned for light manufacturing and logistics operations. It is bisected by the N3, the key road route between the port of Durban and the economic heartland of Gauteng province. Over 200 medium to large firms (excluding consumer and community services) have already established themselves here.

Notable recent and ongoing developments include:

Hammarsdale is approximately 95% occupied in free standing, industrial estate and now multi-tenanted repurposed textile operations. There are relatively few sites remaining available for green fields development.

Cato Ridge offers numerous development opportunities with large platformed sites available.

These private sector-led developments are being supported by infrastructure investments by the Government including upgrades to road networks, sewer infrastructure, water treatment works and public housing.
